Leadership in a Hurting World

The world is hurting.

War. Inflation. Division. Depression.

Burnout is at an all-time high. Loneliness is an epidemic that kills more people than smoking. We are more divided than we’ve ever been. More isolated. More hopeless.

What does this have to do with leadership?

Everything.

I think leaders lose sight of the fact that their job is to support their people, and furthermore, that they are stewards of the employees who work for them.

I get it. I’ve been there. You’re busier than ever. The economy being what it is translates into everyone is doing more with less, meaning that we’re normalizing overloading and overworking all positions, and no one feels that pressure more than leaders.

But let me ask you this: what is your purpose?

If you’re in leadership, there is no higher calling than the people you’re entrusted with. Those humans who are in your care. The people doing the work, on the front lines with customers or clients or patients.

If you’re in leadership, you are a servant; you’re meant to support them.

Their wellbeing is in your hands. You get them 40+ hours a week. You’re in charge of whether their work is fulfilling. Whether they’re thriving.

In a world that is hurting like never before, are you contributing to the solution?

Or are you part of the problem?
